Research Resources for Complementary and Alternative Medicine:

PubMedPubMed is one method to access MEDLINE, the world's largest biomedical database, produced by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). Nearly 5,200 journals from over 70 countries are indexed and the 16 million references go back to 1966. Indexing keywords are known as MeSH terms. The MeSH term, alternative medicine, is linked to 26 main headings. Go to the MeSH Browser and enter the search term, 'alternative medicine' or 'complementary therapies'.

MEDLINE – Access MEDLINE using your Houston Public Library card to retrieve full text articles from many medical journals including JAMA and the New England Journal of Medicine. Locate MEDLINE on the list of databases. You will need to enter your last name and library card number to obtain access.

HerbMedHerbMed is an evidence-based herbal database providing hyperlinked access to scientific research on herbs, categorized and summarized, with dynamic updating. It is a project of the Alternative Medicine Foundation.

MedlinePlus – MedlinePlus provides information for both health professionals and consumers from the National Library of Medicine. Over 750 diseases and conditions are covered. Information is authoritative and up to date. The site includes a medical encyclopedia and medical dictionary as well as tutorials on common conditions, tests, and treatments.

Wanfang Online Journals – The Wanfang Online Journals database provides full text for 30 Chinese medical, health and biology journals translated into English. Wanfang Data is affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Science & Technology. This database can only be accessed from ACAOM campus computers.

Alt Health Watch  – This alternative health database provides full text about complementary and alternative medicine dating back to 1990. Obtain access using your Houston Public Library card. Locate Alt Health Watch on the list of databases. You will need to enter your last name and library card number to obtain access.

Natural and Alternative Treatments – This database contains information on conditions, natural and alternative treatments, herbs and supplements, and drug interactions. Obtain access using your Houston Public Library card. Locate Natural and Alternative Treatments on the list of databases. You will need to enter your last name and library card number to obtain access.
